I am now over halfway through NaBloPoMo and without wanting to jinx things, I am pretty pleased that so far I have managed to post everyday. I like to do this blogging exercise as it really does focus my mind about why I blog, what I like to blog about and the problems I face with blogging.
Last week, I spent a couple of days in a school observing classes – a requirement of my teaching application. This is something I have not really mentioned here lately (or maybe ever). This year, I will be submitting an application to start teacher training in 2012. This has been part of my long-term plan ever since I started my second degree with the OU in 2005. This application, along with my short-lived but stressful brush with the potential of being unemployed, highlighted to me the importance of a sanitised online presence. I am very visible online since I am not particularly scared of the internet – I use my real name, post pictures of myself and those I know, and write about my life. So if prospective employers or academic institutions are to Google me, I have to be sure they don’t mind what they see.
As my blog has become more visible to my real-life friends and family, I have semi-consciously started the sanitising process – there is something uncomfortable about reading the most personal thoughts and feelings of someone you know in a public forum. As a result, I very rarely ‘get real’ and in fact the last time I did, it made me feel terrible. I shared my mounting frustration and hurt at not conceiving the exact day before I find out I was pregnant, invoking a slew of sympathetic remarks to which I could not reply honestly since this was news I couldn’t share straight away.
My urge to write an open and honest blog, then, must be reined in by the need for discretion, especially when your future profession depends on it. Still, it is a shame that my ability to completely myself is hampered along the way. No doubt this will just mean I start a short-lived anonymous blog which I will promptly forget about.
