If you know me IRL, and usually get a gift from us at Christmas, there is a good chance you will receive something handmade this year. Not only will this save some money but it is something I have been wanting to do for some years now.

Yesterday, I shared my Chistmas make list over at sew make believe. If you don’t want to know what I might make, look away now!

A Study in ScarletA Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

2011 seems to be a year of getting to those authors who you really ought to have already read but for some reason, haven’t. This is the first ACD / Sherlock Holmes novel I have read and I am sorry that it has taken so long because I loved it.

This is our current sew make believe book club pick and I am so glad it was chosen. Every police / crime TV show and novel produced since owes a debt to Doyle for his skillful and intriguing Holmes who has almost supernatural powers of deduction.

1880s London is brought to life the shift in the second part to Utah is similarly engrossing. I read it very quickly and was desperate to know not only how the murdered man came to be found in the empty London residence but also how Holmes came to work it out. The writing has held up remarkably – it is so fresh, amusing, exciting and vivid. I will most definitely be reading more Sherlock Holmes novels.

Vintage fair fun

On Saturday, Evelina and I took a mooch around Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair.  We had set up a sew make believe meetup for the fair with a loose arrangement to meet there so it was so nice to wander around and bump into Zoe S and Paul, Roisin and her friend Lauren, Nicky, Jen and Em, Abi and Flick, Antoniya and her friend and Zoe W.  I couldn’t stay for too long as Evelina is a bit of a lump now to lug around in the Baby Bjorn but I did manage to pick up a pretty yellow bird necklace.

I have thing for tattoo-style jewellery and would love some more. This is one I found and added to my overly-optimistic birthday wish list! I also added a couple of things from Tiffany & Co although in truth I would most of the store!  This key necklace is so pretty:

Last Wednesday at our sew make believe Sit ‘n’ Sew, Cie presented me with a beautiful cuff bracelet to match my new look.  I am so thoroughly thrilled with this gorgeous piece of jewellery which both fits in with my nautical look as well as my crafty love.

I was so touched that she had whipped this up for me so quickly and so well – it is so well made.  I am especially in love with the striped buttons and very impressed that she parted with these.  As a crafter, you start making favourite with your supplies and if I had these buttons, I am not sure I could have parted with them!

At the Sit ‘n’ Sew, I managed to make a decent start on the embellished tee which I mentioned in my ‘new look’ post – I just have a fair few buttons to sew on and I may have to replace a couple of the ones that stand a bit too proud and droop as a result.  I love how it is coming along though and pleased I have managed to make a £6 plain white tee look so much more interesting.

That red and white button is one of those ‘favourites’ of mine that I was just talking about.
