**Mild spoilers: no plot spoilers but some song titles and guest star mentions **
Season 2 of Glee started in the US a couple of weeks ago so I caught up on the first two episodes at the end of last week. I will not give any spoilers away because unlike some of the other shows I watch, I know a lot of people dig Glee over here.
Season 1, in particular the first 13 episodes before the hiatus, was a sensation. It was totally fresh, a unique piece of television programming chock full of talented people, adorable outfits, crazy good songs and Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester. Oh and the Will-shaped spinning. It’s all about the spinning. The end of season 1 had lost a bit of momentum but still brought the sectionals drama to a close in the best way possible – no cheesy predictable win here. And despite some of the initial excitement and novelty being muted, I still loved the show.
When season 2 started, some of that excitement seems to have dropped away even more and I know this because a) I didn’t watch it the moment it was available and b) when I did watch it, especially episode 1 of the new season, I was, dare I say it, slightly underwhelmed. I wonder if the show has become to some extent a victim of its own success. Over the summer, the Glee kids were all over the internet with clips of their live shows and various performances showing up left, right and centre. Episode 2 was much more like the Glee we know and love and it contained a LOT of Brittany (and a little bit of Britney) which made for some excellent songs and a return to the heart of the show.
I am rarely one of these people that starts to get bored with something the minute everyone else starts liking it but funnily enough, that’s how this feels to me. I could not have been happier to see that this show was renewed for two more seasons but I will be interested to see how the writers cope with the influx of guest stars and the demand for excellent music whilst still keeping the stories of the characters we love intact. Maybe I am just sore because Will appears to be more and more of a dill and that is such a shame (because of the spinning. And the arms.). With all that said, the musical aspect of the show is as tight as ever. Empire State of Mind, Lady Gaga’s Telephone and the Britney episode… all superb.
