The White Tiger

The White Tiger The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga

Hmm. I am still ruminating on this book. I am not sure I can say I enjoyed the whole experience of reading it although for a while there, through the middle of the book, I was quite entertained by Balram. Ultimately, the depressing nature of world that surround the white tiger means that the humour is buried beneath murder, poverty, disloyalty, violence and dirt.

I am now about to start reading The Other Side of Truth by Beverley Naidoo, which is another set book on my course.

Finished!

It may have been under word count (although still within 10% so it’s all gravy) and it may have been 15 minutes late (but just 15 minutes which is much better than I thought it would be at 10pm), but the essay is completed and submitted.  Definitely not in the pass1 area of marks – in fact, I will be lucky to scrape a pass 2 but the fact is it’s submitted, it’s got to be at least a pass of some kind and I am now only 2 essays and 1 extended essay from finishing my degree.  Goddamn, this is a good feeling.

Desperate Googling

I noticed that the brief blog I posted about Swallows and Amazons has been receiving a bit of traffic, no doubt due to the search term ‘swallows and amazons realism’ which is listed in my stats. And I know why.  These poor people are writing the essay that I have not yet started and they are googling to try to find the answer, the key to the essay, the inspiration to get started, anything which will make the essay writing process that little bit easier.  I am not unsympathetic.  I may have googled essay titles myself in the past.  I am only too happy to help although I am afraid that my post will not have helped them much since I was purposely brief and not particularly insightful.

What bothers me, though, is that I have not even started to think properly about the essay yet, and seeing all these hits on my blog is stressing me out!  The due date is next Thursday which means I have to get a wriggle on with finishing the required reading (the course materials plus Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry which is only necessary if I want to choose that as one of the novels to discuss but I would like to read it anyway).  Right now, I am in that deceptive calm period which unfortuantely lasts far too long.  This is followed by the panic-fuelled hysteria which usually kicks in approximately 36 hours before the deadline and therefore far too late for any reasonable amount of essay writing prep time.

Swallows and Amazons forever

Swallows and Amazons Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome

I have just finished reading Swallows and Amazons for my Open University course. The essay I need to write looks at fantasy vs reality, with Swallows and Amazons an example of realism. The natural dialogue and the detailed descriptions make this somewhat dated setting still seem fresh, despite the fact that the freedom experienced by the children of the book places the story very much in the past.

I can certainly understand why this book has lasting appeal well into the 21st century for children and adults alike. Children will enjoy the adventures and vivid imaginations of the Walker and Blackett children. Adults will, depending on their age, enjoy the nostalgic reminiscences of a more innocent time (whether that time was a reality or not) or wistfully yearn for the same kinds of freedom for themselves which modern adult life usually denies.
