This is always fun so here are my first ten this time around…
Pulp ‘Underwear’
This song is off the album Different Class and recalls a very specific time when I was at university. I listened to this album to death which means I barely ever listen to it anymore although I did the other day and realised how much I still like it.
Metallica ‘Wherever I May Roam’
Metallica came up in my last shuffle so I wont go on and on about them again. I will say that this song id probably one of my favourite. It has one of the best first lines ever: ‘And the road becomes my bride’.
Jamelia ‘Numb’
Jamelia covered Linkin Park’s Numb for Radio 1 in the Live Lounge and it made it on to this first compilation. The whole album is excellent but I particularly like this cover.
Christina Aguilera ‘Aint No Other Man’
Christina is a complete guilty pleasure for me. She may do to many vocal gymnastics but there is not denying that the girl can sing. I really like Back to Basics – the old style and the new coming together. This song is especially catchy.
No Doubt ‘Don’t Speak’
Aw this song is beautiful. Again, it reminds me of being in the third year at Uni (although I think it was released before that), standing in my friend’s bedroom, looking through her CDs. The same mental image comes to me whenever I hear this song, which is pretty annoying.
En Vogue ‘Whatta Man’
I started listening to En Vogue because of my best friend from university. I still listen to this in the car so I can sing my socks off without causing anyone any aural harm. This song was a collaboration
Suzanne Vega ‘Marlene On The Wall’
I must have listened to this album hundreds of times be proxy – my brother was a big Suzanne Vega fan. A year or so ago, he bought me some iTunes vouchers so I thought it only fitting to treat myself to first album (from which this song is taken). The music hasn’t aged. She tells a story with her songs and I am captivated when I am listening to her.
Prodigy ‘Charly’
I can safely say I hated this song when it was first released. Dance music of any kind ws abhorrent to me in my early to late teens (and early twenties for that matter) and it was only when Prodigy released Firestarter (and the album it was on, The Fat of the Land) that I started paying attention. I since bought the singles and get a warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia now listening to this song.
Heart ‘If Looks Could Kill’
In all their rock-out big-haired guitar-soloing words-belting glory, Heart were one of my first music-loves. Huge in the 80s in the US, they had some popularity over here (especially with their biggest hit ‘Alone’). I adore this band and I still love to listen to their stuff – I only recently bought their greatest hits having had a sudden urge for some Wilson sisters action!
Cat Power ‘Love and Communication’
We bought the album The Greatest on our road trip up the east coast of US in May 2006. We visited Wilmington (so I can see where they filmed Dawson’s Creek!) and wondered into CD Alley which is the shotting location for the video shop in Dawson’s Creek and the record store in One Tree Hill. The staff were really friendly and helpful and suggested this album to us and also the Grandaddy new album (which we also bought – we are suckers for good service!). This dreamy CD was perfect for the open road and of course, now when I hear it, I think of North Carolina, Virginia, and Shenandoah which is not such a bad thing.
Wanna play? The rules are simple. Take your iPod / iPhone / MP3 player of choice / CD player (old school!) and then SHUFFLE (and no cheating!!)…

I CALL FIX – these choices are relatively far too cool to be what genuinely came up on your shuffle – I should know, I’ve been on the receiving end of your shuffles on car journeys before ;o)
I swear to you, my loving husband, that this is real. It is indeed a massive fluke since it missed out Annie, Fame, a load of songs from Dawson’s Creek and I am sure the list can go on but that is all I can think of right now.
