A Belated and Short 2008 Reading Review

I didn’t read nearly enough books in 2008 – the lack of train commute is really starting to show.  The highlights of my reading year were definitely The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon and Atonement by Ian McEwan. I have another book of McEwan (On Chesil Beach) to read in 2009 and I was recommended Saturday when I was in Waterstones so I will be checking that out when I get a chance along with other Chabon novels.  There are a couple of books I started but didn’t finish – I am struggling with Jasper Fforde’s The Eyre Affair and so I have taken a rest (again) and hope to crack it another time. I am currently enjoying reading Sepulchre by Kate Mosse although (and I realise how lame this sounds) but the tome-like hardback is putting me off my usual pre-sleep reading time.

I haven’t talked about the last book I did finish in 2008.  The Call of the Wild by Jack London is another classic children’s book that I have read for the first time as an adult and I have to say I was pretty charmed by it. London’s ability to bring such a character to a dog was impressive and it allow the reader to empathise with this plucky canine.  And what wonderful cover art there is for this book.  I love browsing through different editions (I had the middle one – Puffin Classics).
